The Newport Psychoanalytic Institute was established in 1983 to promote the diverse theories and techniques that have evolved from the work of Sigmund Freud. NPI is a free standing non-profit institute, committed to an integrative study of the many psychoanalytic schools of thought regarding the complexities of human experience. We are committed to an educational atmosphere that promotes curiosity, openness and critical thinking in the professional therapist's ongoing development of clinical skills. To this end, students are given the opportunity to take an active part in the creation of their learning experience, participating alongside faculty on committees and other activities related to the student's course of study. Students are typically drawn to NPI for several reasons. We offer a warm ambiance in small colloquiums of talented and creative senior and student clinicians. The open collegial environment of the Institute translates into a rich experience of personal relationships, providing added meaning to NPI's excellent analytic training experience. NPI's goal is to enable students to deepen their work with patients while further developing their psychological selves, thus becoming effective psychoanalysts.
The Certificate in Psychoanalysis and Psy.D. in Psychoanalysis programs are a five year program including both topic oriented seminars and case work. The seminars provide students with a broad understanding of psychoanalytic history and current theory. The goal of the program is to offer a balance between theoretical and clinical, encompassing a wide range of perspectives. The case conferences are designed to give the students the opportunity to integrate theory with technique, as they present casework in a protected group setting.

Clinical Issues in Psychoanalysis Electives as designed by faculty and students Students have the opportunity to apply psychoanalytic techniques in their clinical work under the supervision of senior training analysts. Supervisors for these cases may be any qualified analyst who meets the Training Committees approval. Personal analysis is considered the cornerstone of analytic training, providing an experiential understanding of the value of the psychoanalytic process as it facilitates one's professional and personal development. Once a student has completed the certificate or Psy.D. program, they may wish to continue on to receive their doctorate degree. The requirements for this program involve continued coursework in selected dissertation research and writing, and the completion of an original dissertation. NPI also offers a one year program designed to give candidates an introduction and overview of psychoanalytic history and technique. The program consists of both topic oriented seminars and case conferences. Many candidates in this program continue on to the Certificate in Psychoanalysis program; as such, the topic oriented courses are designed to fulfill requirements in the Certificate in Psychoanalysis program. NPI's programs are approved by the California Department of Education, The Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education, and the Medical Board of California. NPI is also a member of the Association for Autonomous Psychoanalytic Institutes (AAPI). All of our courses are taught by distinguished faculty in the field of psychoanalysis from throughout Southern California. NPI draws faculty from all other institutes in Southern California as well as our own core faculty. There are a number of ongoing educational opportunities throughout the year intended to enrich the students learning experience as well as provide outreach to the larger mental health community. These include NPI's annual spring conference presented by internationally renowned analysts, and ongoing continuing education series on significant psychoanalytic topics. An annual open house every spring for prospective students who would like to experience actual classes firsthand and meet students and faculty members. ^ top |
