Selection for psychoanalytic training at NPI is based on prior education, clinical training, clinical experience, and evidence of potential in psychoanalytic competence. Those applicants whose written applications meet the criteria will then be invited to three interviews, one of which requires the presentation of clinical work. Interviewers will assess personal and professional qualifications. Applicants must possess certain character traits and ethical values which will be accessed during the interview process. These include: maturity, self-reflection, genuine honesty, integrity, flexibility, and strength of character. NPI accepts licensed Mental Health Professionals and Interns. Qualified applicants who are not licensed by the State of California to practice psychotherapy but who hold a Ph.D. or terminal M.A. in a related field may apply in the Research Psychoanalyst Registration program approved through the Medical Board of California. NPI's programs admit qualified applicants and do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, handicap, or national or ethnic origin. The application deadline for the 2008-2009 academic year is July 1, 2008. Courses begin on September 5, 2008.
