COURSE DESCRIPTION:We will discuss the complexity of addressing boundary issues that present dilemmas. A variety of situations will be explored: love in the analytic relationship, erotic feelings, hate, self-disclosure, touch, use of couch, handling session endings, contact between sessions, etc. For each dilemma, we will examine how the analyst’s decision regarding the boundary either opens up or forecloses on relational possibilities in the therapy. In addition, a brief historical overview of issues regarding provisions and abstinence will be discussed as well as how to evaluate their impact on the patient.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course student should be able to

  1. Identify specific dilemmas regarding self-disclosure.
  2. Explicate considerations regarding phone contact between sessions
  3. List special provisions regarding session endings.

INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Ira Poll has been a clinical psychologist since 1987. She graduated from CSPP in 1986. In 1999 Dr. Poll graduated from the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis and has been a psychoanalyst since that time. She has been a supervising and training psychoanalyst since 2001. Special interests include working with attachment difficulties, trauma, mood disorders and couple therapy. She has also been an instructor for NPI and ICP over the last 20 years.
