COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course will provide students with psychoanalytic insights and ideas regarding substance abuse/addictions. Applications of these concepts will be discussed using clinical work from the instructor, as well as from class participants.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

          1. List three contributions to the analytic understanding of substance use disorders from the following theorists; Edward Glover, Heinz Kohut, and Henry Krystal.
  1. Identify two ways that these authors’ contributions guide treatment options when working with substance addicted clients.
  2. Write two paragraphs on how Mary Brady’s description of the drug as a neglectful caregiver can be used to facilitate treatment for substance disorders.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Holly Han, PsyD, MFT has been in clinical practice for 20 years. The majority of her work has involved treating clients struggling with substance abuse and addiction—in incarcerated settings, residential rehabilitation, and on an outpatient basis.
