About Theories of Mind: An Introduction to Working Psychoanalytically 

This course introduces the key schools of thought within the psychoanalytic tradition, including Freud, Ego psychology, Klein, Object relations, Winnicott, and others. We will explore the similarities and differences between these theories in order to foster a comprehensive understanding of the diverse perspectives within psychoanalysis.

This ongoing course will begin on January 30th and continue through March 6, 2026. The course will meet each Friday during the 6 week duration from 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm PST. This course will take place on Zoom.

Required text: Freud and Beyond by Mitchell and Black.

Course Objectives:

  1. Note the difference between a theory of mind and a theory of psychology
  2. Discuss the variety of ways differing theories of mind and psychology imply differing clinical practices.
  3. Identify the main historical trends in psychoanalytic thought.
  4. Apply the theoretical models discussed to clinical practice.
  5. Discuss and articulate salient distinctions between theoretical models.

About Case Conceptualization Course: 

This 6-week intensive course introduces participants to psychodynamic case conceptualization grounded in the work of Nancy McWilliams. Across six weeks the course will guide students in developing nuanced, rich understandings of their clients based on personality organization and character structure rather than symptom checklists. Some of the major topics of the class include, personality organization, psychodynamic diagnosis, defense mechanisms, and how to gather and organize data  into a coherent case formulation. This course will be taught using brief lectures, focused readings, and case vignettes  

Required Text: Psychoanalytic Case Formulation (McWilliams, Nancy).

Course Objectives:  

  1. Students will be able to identify the different levels of personality organization.
  2. Identify the core principles of psychodynamic diagnosis according to McWilliams. 
  3. Students will be able to identify major personality styles.
  4. Students will be able to begin to distinguish between major personality styles. 
  5. Identify various defense mechanisms. 
  6. Be able to demonstrate the ability to organize clinical data into a case formulation.
