Join Dr. Holly Han and Dr. Shirley Liao for a five-week, psychoanalytically-informed group exploring the text Racial Melancholia, Racial Dissociation by David L Eng and Shinhee Han (2019). Together, we will reflect on the social and psychic dimensions of racial identity and belonging in the lives of Asian Americans.

Course Objectives:

  1. Explore and critically engage with the central theories of racial melancholia and racial dissociation, including how these concepts explain the psychic effects of racism, immigration, and identity formation.
  2. Examine the clinical case studies and narratives used by Eng & Han to illustrate how race, sexuality, and mental health intersect in the lives of Asian American students and patients.
  3. Be able to situate the book’s arguments within broader historical, cultural, and socio-political contexts such as post-1965 immigration, neoliberalism, and the model minority myth.
  4. Explain and explore how the themes of the book relate to their own experiences or observations of race, identity, and mental health in their communities or institutions.
  5. Explain what is meant by “racial dissociation.”
  6. Explain what is meant by “racial melancholia.”
  7. Explain how mourning and melancholia are reenacted and lived out by second-generation children.
