The Newport Psychoanalytic Institute (NPI) offers a rich and diverse training experience for clinicians and therapists wanting to further their education in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Established in 1983, NPI serves the greater South Orange County area.

We provide a supportive community of professional psychoanalysts dedicated to helping psychotherapy candidates and students find their own unique and creative analytic voice. In the spirit of intellectual openness, theoretical diversity, and academic excellence, NPI provides a wide range of training programs to postgraduate, licensed mental health professionals as well as doctoral level professionals in other fields with an interest in psychoanalytic training.

NPI is a multi-faceted and vibrant psychoanalytic community dedicated to the study and practice of psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Our endeavor is to inspire candidates, faculty, and members to grow in their clinical expertise and to provide a supportive community for psychoanalytic activities throughout their professional life.

A Welcoming, Eclectic Community

NPI welcomes applications for psychoanalytic training from licensed Mental Health Professionals and Interns, including Clinical Psychologists, LCSWs, MFTs, Research Psychoanalysts, MDs, and Nurses. In the ambiance of small classes, candidates hone and deepen the development of their clinical skills.

All of our courses are taught by knowledgeable faculty experienced in the field of psychoanalysis. In addition to our own core faculty, NPI draws faculty from other training institutes in Southern California. The collegial environment of senior analysts from a variety of analytic persuasions working closely with training candidates provides a psychoanalytic community embracing the foundations of psychoanalytic thought from the origins of Freud’s theory to the most innovative technical and neuroscientific advances in the field.

Newport Psychoanalytic Institute is approved to operate by the State of California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education, the Medical Board of California, and the California Board of Behavioral Science.

Approval to operate means compliance with state standards as set forth by the Education Code. Our programs do not qualify the recipient to sit for the licensing examination in the field of psychology, marriage and family therapy, or clinical social work. They do, however, qualify for continuing education units in those fields.

The American Psychoanalytic Association (APsA) is the oldest national psychoanalytic organization in the nation.
