Preamble
In response to NPI Member feedback, we have reflected and adjusted our statement. We mourn the lives lost in the October 7th attack on Israeli civilians, an event that brought profound grief and trauma. Our condemnation of genocide does not diminish our recognition of the unbearable suffering of those families and communities. Violence against any people perpetuates collective trauma and deepens the cycles of dehumanization that psychoanalysis seeks to understand and transform.
Statement
We at NPI are compelled to make a statement about injustice, and in particular, about the genocide in Gaza. We want to break our silence and encourage dialogue on this important issue.
A Declaration Against Genocide
We are compelled to transform psychoanalytic training to address the transgenerational impact of mass murder at the intrapsychic and social levels, beginning with a review of the fundamental values of psychoanalysis.
We unequivocally condemn the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people via deliberate starvation, forced displacement, and mass killing
We condemn the targeted death of children.
We support the Israeli soldiers and citizens who are also being punished and condemned for their resistance.
We advocate that mental health organizations and practitioners publicly denounce this genocide.
We urge our community to reflect on the institutional silence that has blocked responses to genocide historically and in the current era. Silence is a form of accepting the systematic erasure of an entire people.
Newport Psychoanalytic Institute – Statement on the Treatment of Immigrants and the “Othering” of Human Beings
The Newport Psychoanalytic Institute (NPI) stands firmly against the marginalization, discrimination, and dehumanization of immigrants and all people who are categorized as “other” based on race, skin color, ethnic origin, cultural background, and immigration status or history.
Psychoanalysis, at its core, is a discipline devoted to deep listening, understanding, and the recognition of the full humanity of every individual. Our commitment to this work extends beyond the consulting room and into the world, where social forces too often injure the minds and hearts of those most vulnerable.
We denounce policies, practices, attitudes—whether institutional or interpersonal—and ideologies that perpetuate xenophobia, racism, or exclusion. The pain caused by labeling people as outsiders or threats—especially based on their appearance, language, country of origin, or immigration status—is not only unjust but has profound negative psychological consequences. Such trauma can induce shock, terror, and a pervasive sense of threat, impacting not only those directly affected, such as individuals who are deported or detained, but also those around them. This collective trauma can ripple outward, creating widespread psychological wounds rooted in fear, shame, and internalized oppression. Psychoanalysis seeks to name, hold, and process these wounds.
NPI is committed to cultivating a community of clinicians and scholars who challenge these injustices, work toward repair, and strive to create spaces where the dignity and subjectivity of every person are upheld. We recognize the historical and contemporary roles that our own field has played in both colluding with and resisting systems of oppression. We continue to examine our own blind spots and to do the work of transformation—personally, professionally, and institutionally.
We believe that standing in solidarity with immigrants and all who are “othered” is not a political gesture, but a moral responsibility and psychoanalytic imperative.
NPI’s Commitment to Inclusivity and Open Dialogue
The Newport Psychoanalytic Institute firmly supports all programs and initiatives that advocate for the rights and freedoms of the transgender community and all LGBTQIA+ individuals. We recognize the vital importance of open discussion and research surrounding all aspects and expressions of the human and social condition. We also uphold the right of institutions and groups to assemble and engage in dialogue on any topic without fear of reprisal or censure. In fostering an environment of inclusivity and open inquiry, we contribute to a richer understanding of diverse experiences and perspectives.
